My first experience with Billy Blanks Tae Bo came almost ten years ago, after I had been in a bad car accident. My doctor had advised me to go to physical therapy, which was extremely painful, and then otherwise do not overexert myself.

After three long months of lying on the couch "resting" my injured back, I was even weaker and more painful than before, since my muscles had hardly moved since the crash. It was on one of these lazy, sore afternoons on the couch that I found myself channel surfing and ended up watching an infomercial about a new fitness craze, called Billy Blanks Tae Bo.

As I watched, I noticed that the men and women at the Billy Blanks Tae Bo studio were of all ages, doing this martial arts style workout that looked very strenuous, but they were all smiling as they were sweating. And they looked very strong and in great shape.

The kicking and punching involved in the Billy Blanks Tae Bo workout also appealed to me, since I'd had a lot of anger and hostility built up from the accident that was not my fault, and I figured that if anything could help me release that, and strengthen my broken body, this could.

Over the next few days, I found that infomercial a few more times, and decided that I was not going to be the victim anymore. So I decided to order the Billy Blanks Tae Bo workout.

A week later I recieved my package, including four Billy Blanks Tae Bo video tapes (this was before DVD's) and immediately put in the first one, which was the intructional video. In it, the instructor, Billy Blanks, is extremely inspirational. He encourages you, no matter what skill or fitness level, to try. To walk by faith, not by sight. He said throughout the video that if you have the will, no matter how hard things are, whether a workout or anything in your life, you can do it.

I was so impressed. I started following along, learning each movement, stiff and painful, but still, I tried my best. There were interviews with some of the people on the video, and as one woman put it, when talking about how people make excuses for not doing the workout, thinking it's too difficult, "Why can't you?". Why can't I? What makes me think I automatically can't doing something? Good point.

As I got better at the movements, developed better balance on my kicks, got stronger in my punches, I began to thoroughly enjoy Billy Blanks Tae Bo. I felt empowered. I was moving again. And for the first time in a long time, I felt stronger. As my muscles got stronger, I was able to actually stand up and walk around for longer and longer periods without feeling drained and weak. I stopped going to physiotherapy, I stopped the medication that knocked me out and rendered me useless. I became addicted to Billy Blanks Tae Bo.

I had my life back.I worked out at least once a day, sweating and breathing heavy through the basic tape, wondering how I'd make it though, but I did it. Billy seems to know when you're ready to give up, and he just won't let you. Hit pause, get some water, walk in place, but never, never give up.

My life changed from that moment. I felt better about myself and my body, but mostly my will is stronger. Billy Blanks Tae Bo is not just fitness for your body, but for your mind and spirit.
